Gilroy Football Season Ends Amid Sexual Assault Investigation

With accusations swirling of a sexual assault taking place that involved the team, the players chose to suspend the season.

GILROY, CA — Amid accusations of sexual assault on campus, the Gilroy High School football players requested the season be suspended Wednesday while the police department investigates the alleged crimes that may have involved players.

The district addressed the football team’s decision to end its season early in a statement.

"The Gilroy High School and the Gilroy Unified School District administration are fully committed to the Gilroy High School varsity football program and completing the 2019 season, as scheduled. However, the district has learned that most of the varsity players have chosen not to finish the season and therefore, at this time, the season will no continue," the statement read.

It continues: "The investigation into allegations made against members of the Gilroy High School varsity football team last week is still in progress," adding: "The Gilroy Unified School District and Gilroy High School administration are committed to providing a safe environment for all students, and maintaining the privacy rights and confidentiality of the students involved in this investigation."

The students accused of being involved in the incident are minors.
