Gilroy Teen Killed In DUI SJ Crash Identified: S.C. Co. Coroner
CHP had reported the driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter among other charges in connection with Thursday's crash.
GILROY, CA — A 16-year-old boy killed in a suspected DUI crash on Thursday in South San Jose has been identified as Joey Pineda of Gilroy, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.
Officers responded to Monterey Road and Palm Avenue at 3:46 a.m. and determined a gold 1999 Toyota Camry had been traveling north on Monterey when it drifted into southbound lanes, struck a center median and crashed into a side guardrail.
Pineda was ejected from the vehicle when the car spun out, and the driver fled north in southbound lanes. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

California Highway Patrol officers ultimately located the Camry about a mile and a half away from the original crash.
Isael Velard, an 18-year-old from Gilroy, was arrested for alleged vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit-and-run, DUI causing injury and being an unlicensed driver, according to police. An adult passenger was also detained.
