Helps Veterans Cope With PTSD: Gilroy Hero

We all know someone who's making a difference. Let's help share these amazing stories! Presented by Ring.

GILROY, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. Together with Ring, we're working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Janet Wenholz, who nominated service dog instructor Mary Cortani.

Reason for recognition: Mary started Operation Freedom Paws in 2010 using a rescued shelter dog to help a veteran cope with his PTSD. She has now worked with over 425 disabled clients & their families, matching hundreds of dogs with them.

One thing to know: In spite of COVID these vital mental health services continue. Mary provides everything each service dog team needs at no charge to them, including a therapist at each class. The program she developed saves lives.
