Police Arrest Second Suspect in Violent Double Robbery

Gilroy police have arrested a second suspect in two Aug. 6 robberies that left a 15-year-old victim hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

Investigators determined that the suspect, 18-year-old Jonathan Aviles, was connected with the two robberies near the 7400 block of Monterey Road around 10 p.m., police said.

The 20-year-old first suspect, Antonio Rodriguez, was arrested that evening for strong-arm robbery involving an injury, police said. Aviles was arrested on robbery charges on the 7200 block of Eigleberry Street at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Police responded on Aug. 6 to a 15-year-old "assault victim being treated at Saint Louise Regional Hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries," according to a press release about the police’s findings.

A second victim, a 46-year-old man, called Gilroy police several minutes later to report being attacked by two suspects earlier in the evening at knife-point, on the 7400 block of Monterey Road near the first incident.

Police received information from security guards downtown who encountered a subject harassing and attempting to rob customers near the scene of the reported robberies on Monterey Road.

The apprehended suspect, Rodriguez, was positively identified as one the assailants involved at least one of the robberies, according to police-Those with information about this case are encouraged to contact Detective Mike Bolton at 408-846-0350.
