Rotary District 5170 Announces New District Governor 2021-22

Embracing new RI Presidential "Serve to Change Lives"

As in Rotary tradition, a passing of the baton, change in leadership takes place every year at this time wrapping up the Rotary year. Following a successful wrap-up year led by District Governor Gregg Giusiana, Rotary District 5170, today officially inducted Richard Flanders as District Governor 5170, 2021-22.

Richard Flanders takes the helm as District Governor 2021-22. The world is slowly returning to normal, which will be a refreshing start for a new Rotary year.

“I am pleased and ready for my new role and move forward with new beginnings, plans, and activities to benefit the community both locally and globally,” said Richard Flanders, District Governor 5170 2021-22.

“We have assembled a great team of leaders and we are all excited to meet again and make good things happen over the next year. As we are coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a great sense of hope and optimism among the Rotary clubs and Rotarians throughout the District,” he added.

“This past year has been challenging due to the Covid-19 pandemic, shelter in place restrictions have indeed played a heavy burden on having club meetings, hosting fundraisers, and projects,” said Past District Governor, Gregg Giusiana.

“However, our clubs did rise to the occasion and used creativity and pivoted to the virtual world of Zoom. I am very proud of all the club accomplishments within their communities, across the globe, and in ourselves,” headded.

District 5170 perserved and through grants and fundraisers, we were able to help fund personal protective gear for first responders, Hospital staff, firefighters, police, and emergency medical responders were all provided with vital supplies.

There were programs to address food security, the needs of youth. Many areas took on the work getting internet service to underserved children so they could attend virtual classes.

About Richard Flanders, District Governor 2021-22

Richard Flanders is a member of the Rotary Club of Pleasanton North, California, U.S.A. He was the President of the Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley for the year 2001-2002 in District 5160.

A Rotarian since 1995, Richard has served as Assistant District Governor in Districts 5170 and 5160. He was District 5170 Lieutenant Governor – Chief of Staff in 2010-2012.

As a Club President in 2001-2002. This club was named the “Best Club”in the district.

Rotary District 5170 has presented him with the “Lead The Way” Award in 2007 for his commitment to the Service of Rotary,

The Neal J. Hoffman Award in 2008 for the most outstanding younger Rotarian in the district who has shown exemplary leadership skills in their club and/or the district,

The Karl Stucki Award in 2015 for Rotarian in the District who exemplifies the Greatest Commitment to Rotary Ideals, and the

Richard D. King Award in 2018 for the Rotarian in the District who makes the greatest personal commitment to the programs of The Rotary Foundation.

He is also a recipient of the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service Award

Richard is an attorney practicing in Alameda, California. He belongs to Alameda County Bar Association. He volunteers with the Alameda County Superior Court as a settlement officer and assisting self-represented litigants at hearings. Richard and his wife Florence have girl/boy twins, Brennyn and Ryson.
