South Bay Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash Near Gilroy: CHP

Witnesses told officers that the motorcyclist lost control for an unknown reason and drifted into the right shoulder.

GILROY, CA — The California Highway Patrol reported Monday night that the person who died in a solo-motorcycle crash earlier that day on U.S. Highway 101 was a 20-year-old San Jose man.

The CHP reports that the man was traveling northbound at about 5:30 p.m. at an unknown high rate of speed in the number three lane, near the Buena Vista Avenue overcrossing north of Gilroy in unincorporated Santa Clara County.

Witnesses told officers that the motorcyclist lost control for an unknown reason and drifted into the right shoulder and up an embankment before colliding with the overcrossing.

The CHP said witnesses stopped to provide care to the man until emergency services arrived, but all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

The investigation has not yet concluded whether drugs or alcohol was a factor in the collision. An inspection of the motorcycle found no prior defects.

The CHP has not yet released the man's name.
