Ranchers burned their cattle brands into wooden panels in the new Milias Restaurant.

Recognize this "squished O?" How about this "double R?"

In the weeks before opening the new owners Ann Zyburra and Adam Sanchez invited local ranchers and members of the Cattleman's Association to burn their distinctive cattle brands into several wood panels. There are quite a few big names here, including a descendant of John Gilroy himself.

According to Wikipedia,  cattle brands were often registered with the government and allowed cattle from several ranches to graze together. When it was time to go to market, workers could separate the animals and use the permanent mark to identify who owned what.

Sanchez said that one brand–a separated T shape–was from as far back as the 1700s.
