Anonymous $26,500 grant supports Citrus College student veterans

The Citrus College Veterans Success Center recently received an anonymous $26,500 grant from a first-time donor that will be used to support student veterans and their families, including the launch of a peer mentor program.

This new mentorship opportunity will train current student veterans on how to provide assistance to veterans entering college for the first time. Through this effort, participants will also be immersed in social and professional networks that will provide access to resources that support the completion of their academic and professional goals.

"On behalf of the Citrus College community, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our generous donor for this meaningful gift to our Veterans Success Center," said Dr. Geraldine M. Perri, superintendent/president of Citrus College. "Making sure that those who have bravely served our country receive all the resources they need to succeed in higher education and beyond is incredibly important, and something this institution takes very seriously."

Mentors and mentees will receive a host of potential benefits through the peer mentor program. For example, mentors will obtain enhanced leadership skills, new knowledge related to coping skills and strategies, and an expanded career network. Mentees are expected to experience a smoother transition to an academic environment, in addition to exposure to transfer opportunities and other educational supports.

This grant comes on the heels of Citrus College being recognized as a Military Friendly School for the 11th consecutive year, as well as a Military Friendly Spouse School for the past two years in a row.

"The Citrus College Veterans Success Center is recognized for its long-standing excellence serving student veterans and military-affiliated families as a designated Military Friendly institution," said Dr. Richard F. Rams, vice president of student services. "We are grateful for this donation, which will allow Citrus College to enhance the student veteran experience further by scaling up plans and accelerating timelines to implement an invaluable student veteran peer mentor program."

The grant will also support activities and social engagements in the post-COVID-19 learning environment, including retreats, seminars and workshops designed to encourage community and increase student retention. Social events, such as movie nights and career-focused field trips, are also being planned.

Rasmussen, president of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees. "Generous acts like this help Citrus College move one step closer to meeting our students' needs and providing them with an invaluable college experience."
