Halloween Safety Tips for San Gabriel Valley Residents
It's Halloween! and these Trick or Treat safety tips matter for grown-ups and little ones. Here is how to ensure you have a fun safe holiday

GLENDORA, CA — At Halloween, kids and grown ups love to dress up and go door to door in search of delicious treats. But are you being safe enough?
Before you put on those costumes or light all those pumpkins with real candles, remember there are better options in 2016 than in year's past.
- Jack o' Lanterns still looks spooky when lit with battery powered candles and will be less likely to catch a costume on fire.
- When you pop out to scare people, make sure it's away from the street and parked cars.
- Common sense rules still apply on Halloween! Be safe when crossing streets and chatting with strangers.
- And remember, your parents should get first choice of the candy. Look for wrappers that are open, apples and remove those items from the candy stash.

Trick or Treat with Friends & Family:
When you trick or treat in large groups, it's more fun for everyone. Kids can be with kids, grownups can enjoy watching everyone have a good time, plus they're good for hauling all of that candy.

- Trick or Treat with a group of friends.
- Or, better yet, bring along a grown up.
Costume Choice.
Be sure you can SEE and be seen.
- Use makeup or face paint instead of a mask, or things that cover your eyes.
- Carry a flashlight so that you can see and be seen easily.
- Wear light colored or reflective type clothing. All costumes should be flame resistant, too!
Scary fun is good!
...but Scaring in a Realistic Way could get you into a lot of trouble.
- Props such as knives, swords, ninja items, etc. should be flexible so that they won't cause injury.
- NO PLAY PROP SHOULD CLOSELY RESEMBLE A REAL ITEM!
Stranger Danger...

- Be cautious of strangers and animals.
- Never go into a stranger's house.

Use Good Judgement when crossing the street. Always look both ways before crossing, especially when it's dark.
- Don't hide--or cross the street--between parked cars.
- Use Crosswalks, or Cross the Street Safely at Corners.
Use Good Judgement for your Kids and Pets...
A few more common sense items at Halloween and all year long.
- Always have a grown-up inspect your treats before you eat them!
- Some people use Halloween as an excuse to hurt cats. Keep your pets indoors where they will be safe.
