L.A.-Area Hospitals Rank Best In Nation, State

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA – Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was ranked the seventh-best hospital in the country Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report, while Cedars-Sinai Medical Center placed 11th.

The ranking for UCLA Medical Center is a dip from last year, when the hospital was ranked fifth on the magazine's annual Best Hospitals Honor Roll. Cedars-Sinai moved up in the rankings, from 17th last year.
Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was again atop the national list, followed by the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Massachusetts General Hospital, UC San Francisco Medical Center and University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was ranked second-best hospital in the state, behind UCSF Medical Center, and first in the Los Angeles area, scoring national rankings in 15 specialties and 10 children's specialties.

Cedars-Sinai placed fourth in the state and second in the Los Angeles area. Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach ranked eighth in the state, Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena placed ninth and Keck Hospital of USC was 10th.

For the Los Angeles area, the best hospitals behind UCLA and Cedars- Sinai were Hoag Memorial, Huntington Memorial, Keck, UC Irvine Medical Center, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance and a tie between St. Joseph Hospital in Orange and St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.

The methodology used by U.S. News is based largely on objective measures with more than 70 percent of the rankings relying on such data. The rankings also took into account survey answers from more than 125,000 physicians across the country about reputation. U.S. News also looked at five years of Medicare data and the number of patients treated in hospitals. The methodology was also updated to avoid penalizing hospitals for treating low-income patients or for accepting high-risk cases transferred from other hospitals. For the best regional hospitals, procedures and conditions rankings were emphasized more than specialty rankings.
