LA County Passes Bill to Subsidize Around 2,200 Jobs for Youth

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a summer program that will aim to create 2,200 jobs countywide for disadvantaged youth.

The program aims to reduce the youth unemployment rate for L.A. County, which stands at nearly 27 percent.

“In these tough economic times, young people are really struggling to find employment, which limits their ability to gain necessary experience for the future,” LA County Supervisor Don Knabe said.

During a press conference last year, Knabe defended a similar program funded with federal stimulus dollars as a practical solution to the region's economic challenges.

"You can print enough money to get us out of the situation that we're in," Knabe said. "It's all about jobs, jobs, jobs."

The summer program for 2011 aims to provide subsidized job opportunities to young people in foster care, on probation, or with families who receive welfare or general relief.
