GLENDORA, CA — She's the one that loved you first, but mom is much more than that. She’s a friend, a teacher, a counselor, a shoulder to cry on — and maybe one of the toughest women you’ve ever met.
We asked Patch readers in more than 1,000 communities to tell us what their moms mean to them. Nearly 200 people responded, paying tribute not just to moms but sometimes to grandmas, sisters and daughters who deserve recognition for Mother’s Day 2021.
Here’s what Colleen of West Covina, CA had to say about mom Arlene of Philippines :

Dear Mama, Every day, I thank God that you are my mom – that he chose to give you to me. At age 10, you had faith in me and allowed me to leave home so I can study at the best schools. You believed in me and empowered me to believe in myself – to say yes to opportunities – even if it meant – moving to a different continent, and being a thousand miles away from you. You supported me so I can achieve my dreams. You didn’t give me the world – but you taught me and my brother that the world is our oyster and that we can conquer the world. You are my best friend – from bruised knees, to broken hearts and redirected goals. I always knew I can run to you. Your hugs and kisses are the best. This pandemic has been so tough, because for the past year, we are not able to travel and see each other. Even though we are apart, your love transcends. I can still feel your love, your prayers, and your guidance. As an adult in my 30’s, I continue to learn from you – how to love your parents in their old age, how to be loving and giving to the people around you, to be strong despite the pain, and to enjoy life. Thank you Mama. Words are not enough. I am incredibly blessed because you are mine. Forever, I love you. Happy Mothers Day! Love, and Colleen
