Let’s Talk Cars!

Welcome to my new column. I hope to share what knowledge I have to help others with any issues, or questions related to their cars and their enjoyment of cars as well. I am open to suggestions for topics that may be of interest to others, as well as being helpful.

This month will be an opening general topic column, then the next few months I will cover the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, earlier in November 2019, and information I obtained doing interviews with participants, as well as other general information relative to car topics. A little about SEMA, from their recent press releases:

About SEMA and the SEMA Show
The SEMA Show is a trade show produced by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a nonprofit trade association founded in 1963. Since the first SEMA Show debuted in 1967, the annual event has served as the leading venue bringing together manufacturers and buyers within the automotive specialty equipment industry. Products featured at the SEMA Show include those that enhance the styling, functionality, comfort, convenience and safety of cars and trucks. Additional details are available at www.SEMAShow.com or www.sema.org, 909/396-0289.

Let’s start with cars and winter…

Winter is here and it’s time, or past time, to pay some attention to your car(s). You don’t want to be delayed, stuck, or other wise inconvenienced with car troubles. Not only that, you don’t want to spend money unnecessarily, that some preventative maintenance might otherwise save you.

Chances are if you do a lot of your own car work, you’re probably not all that interested in me telling you about preventative maintenance. But, if you don’t know a lot about cars, this could truly help and save you money now and in the long run.

In general, the most important safety issue we all face with cars are the condition of the brakes and tires. They should always be in top condition. Remember, even though newer model cars have a tire pressure monitoring system, does not mean that you should not check the pressure regularly. Next, to help avoid breakdowns and long term issue we want to be sure to change the oil, check all fluids, particularly the condition of your anti-freeze, as it’s going to be cold and that becomes even more critical. Be sure your belts are in good condition, wiper blades and filters. If you have an owner’s manual, follow it’s maintenance schedule to prolong your car’s useful life. If not, a dealer, or independent shop can provide you with a maintenance schedule. You can also look them up online!

If you’re going to an auto repair shop for maintenance, know that you can ask and are entitled to see any parts that the shop suggests you replace, as well as they can show you the condition of the fluids. If you don’t know a shop you can trust, try to get recommendations from friends, look them up online and once you have found one, it’s a good idea to service with them regularly.

Frank Besnyi…

I have worked with cars in one capacity, or another, most of my life. I have 2 cars I have restored, and show at car shows, as well as a few more I drive more regularly. I do my best to keep up with the latest in technology and all that is involved with the auto industry. I attend auto trade shows, read the latest information available, as well as attend car shows and host my own show. For more information on my show and to see more pics of my Milano Maroon 1965 Corvette and my Gun Metal Grey 1967 El Camino SS, as well as the many cars that attend, check out my Facebook Page…
