Planning on Heading to 'Mavericks' Surfing Comp? Read This Warning First

Sheriff's officials are tell you to stay home to watch the event online, and be prepared for some extra traffic in the Peninsula on Friday.

The following is an announcement from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office:

The Mavericks surfing event will go on tomorrow, Friday 2/12/16, in Half Moon Bay. Law enforcement from county, state and federal agencies will be on hand to make this event safe for event staff, competitors and guests.

This years event will have NO on site viewing at the competition. Those who wish to view this event live can do so at one of many designated Mavericks viewing party locations. See http://titansofmavericks.com/ . Viewing will not be allowed near the competition site or bluffs.

For safety and security, the bluffs and beach from Ocean Blvd and Bernal Ave in Princeton including, Ross Cove, Pillar Point Bluffs and Mavericks Beach will be restricted. Law enforcement will have checkpoints and security will be on scene.

Experts have predicted waves up to 20 feet with dangerous breaks. We want to warn all those who will be in or near the water to use extreme caution.

The California Highway Patrol will be restricting access in Princeton. The intersections at Airport St. / Los Banos Ave, and Prospect Way / Capistrano Rd., will be closed from 6a.m. until the end of the event.

Locals and visitors should expect heavy traffic in the area. The Sheriff’s Office and CHP will be enforcing safety on the roads and all illegally parked vehicles are subject to citation or tow.

The United States Coast Guard, Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Harbor Master will be in the water securing a perimeter around the competition area. Outside swimmers and vessels are advised to not interfere in the competition area.
