Service Above Self Top Honor Goes to Mike Serdy: Coastside Volunteer of the Year
Mike Serdy awarded 6th annual Service Above Self Award Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay Magic of the Coastside Event

In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 200 guests at the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay’s annual fundraiser Magic of the Coastside, Mike Serdy was recognized as the 2017 recipient of the Service Above Self Award. He received the top honor and was recognized along with his fellow finalists Duane Myers, Pat & Marc Strohlein, and Barbara Von Glahn for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the Coastside. 2017 marks the sixth year for this award. The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay started this tradition to honor the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self, and actively seeks nominations from the local nonprofit community at large.
Mike Serdy was nominated by the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, where he has served as a volunteer and in volunteer leadership positions for more than 15 years. His biggest and most visible accomplishment was serving as Board President from 2009-2015, during which time the Senior Campus (in partnership with the Senior Coastsiders, county of San Mateo and city of Half Moon Bay) was envisioned, designed, funded and built. The Senior Campus, located at 925 Main Street in Half Moon Bay, is located within the Half Moon Village complex which boasts 264 units for seniors who need affordable housing and services. The Senior Campus has become a popular center for the Coastside community, and Mike’s contributions to making this vision a reality have been invaluable.
Coastside Adult Day Health Center’s executive director Janie Bono-James points out that Mike’s contributions are ongoing – he currently serves as CFO – and that he helps a helping hand wherever needed. “Mike volunteers to work the Food Court at the Pacific Coast Dream Machines, our biggest fundraiser of the year. His dedication and perseverance makes this community a better place for people of all ages.” The Coastside Adult Day Health Center has a mission to serve the frail and elderly population, with a goal to keep people as healthy, active, independent
