Hermosa Beach City Council Announces Parking Permit Design Winner

Enforcement of the new parking permits will begin at 10 a.m. March 20.

Hermosa Beach resident Keith Brinker was named the winner of the 11th Annual Residential Parking Permit Design Contest, City Finance Director Viki Copeland announced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Brinker’s original design (pictured on the right and linked here for download) appears on the City’s 2021-2022 residential parking permits. The design draws on multiple elements of Hermosa’s storied history and natural beauty, with tie-dye skies representing the City’s cotton candy sunsets, an iconic Hermosa Beach lifeguard tower depicted next to a flying seabird with rolling waves below and the City’s landmark Tim Kelley statue on the right.

Brinker works locally as a graphic designer, designing and building brands and websites for clients. He said he spends much of his free time at the beach and creating art, and he wanted to reflect the sense of calm he feels at the beach in his permit design.

“With my design, what you see is what you get,” said Brinker. “I was inspired by a picture of a Hermosa Beach lifeguard tower I took years ago, and I did my best to include every element — from the ocean to the sky — that makes this City uniquely special to me and its residents. My wife, a lifelong Hermosa resident who I met here, also inspired me to include the iconic Tim Kelley statue that her uncle Paul Gudmundsson was instrumental in helping preserve.”

The City of Hermosa Beach will mail residents the renewal postcards for the 2021-2022 Residential Parking Permits during the week of January 25. Enforcement of the new parking permits will begin at 10 a.m. on March 20, 2021.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, City Hall continues to be fully operational but not open to the public so there will be no over-the-counter permit sales at City Hall. Online sales and renewals begin Monday, February 1, at 12 a.m. To apply, please submit information online or by email at ParkingPermits@hermosabeach.gov. To submit an application through the U.S. Mail, please mail to City Hall, 1315 Valley Drive, Room 101, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254. The quickest way to obtain permits is using the online system. Please allow 5-7 business days for processing time for mailed permit requests.

Residential permits cost $40 each, with the exception of the 100% Alternative Fuel Vehicle Permit which will be issued at no charge for 100% electric or 100% compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. All residential permits are valid until February 2022. Only Hermosa Beach residents who live within the City’s Impacted Parking Area are eligible to purchase a residential parking permit.

To renew an existing residential permit, residents will need the following:

  • Renewal post card from the City or proof of residency less than 30 days old (rental/lease agreements, utility bills and tax bills are all valid examples)
  • Valid picture identification (valid examples include a driver’s license, California I.D., passport or military I.D.)
  • Employee parking permits can be purchased for $143 by employees who work in the same impacted areas of Hermosa Beach if they provide a valid ID, vehicle registration and a current pay stub indicating they work in Hermosa Beach.
