The nonprofit national community service campaign encourages residents to make a series of simple pledges at mywaterpledge.com to use water more efficiently, reduce pollution and save energy. It also reminds residents that simple individual actions can add up to big changes in protecting the environment. In addition, it offers physical hands-on projects or actions that can be done to decrease water consumption in a neighborhood or backyard at My Volunteer Water Project.
“Over the past 10 years, the City of Hermosa Beach has used over 300 million gallons of recycled water at our parks and public areas to conserve water and protect our environment,” said Mayor Massey. “I fully support the mission of the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation and ask Hermosa residents to join me – and the City – in taking the pledge to personally conserve water.”

Since 2013, the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge pledge reports that it has saved over 7 billion gallons of water. Last year, residents from over 2,000 cities across the country pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by over 1 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 29 million pounds and prevent hundreds of thousands of pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. The Challenge also examines how water use will affect the future of communities.
Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category will have a chance to win $3,000 toward their home utility bills and hundreds more eco-friendly prizes, including irrigation smart controllers and gift cards. The Challenge also gives residents a chance to nominate a deserving charity that would benefit from receiving a 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and features additional resources for residents to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues to cost-saving tips at home.
