The proclamation says that the City of Hermosa is committed to supporting visibility, dignity and equity for all people in the community. It notes that while many advancements have been made, there continues to be opposition to the LGBTQ+ community around the world, which makes it important for cities like Hermosa Beach to show support for LGBTQ+ residents who are affected by discrimination.
The City plans to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month by flying the Pride flag, lighting Pier Plaza in the Pride flag colors and supporting residents Izzy and Jose Bacallao’s plan to repaint Hermosa’s lifeguard tower immediately north of the Hermosa Beach pier in the rainbow colors of the Pride flag for Pride month in June and through the end of summer. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a motion, authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn, that paved the way for the repainting.

“We thank Supervisor Hahn and the Board of Supervisors for allowing Hermosa Beach to recognize and honor our LGBTQ+ community by painting one of the County’s iconic lifeguard towers in the rainbow colors of the Pride flag. Members of the Hermosa community proposed this project in response to a suspected arson that destroyed a County lifeguard tower painted in Pride colors in Long Beach,” said Mayor Massey. “The ‘Rainbow Tower’ in Hermosa, lighting on Hermosa’s Pier Plaza and flying of the Pride flag throughout Pride Month in June will remind everyone that all are welcome in Hermosa Beach, where the values of equality and diversity run strong.”
Nationally, LGBTQ+ Pride Month is celebrated each year during the month of June to commemorate the June 1969 uprising in New York City at the Stonewall Inn against the harassment of LGBTQ+ persons.
