Trader Joe's Opens in Hermosa Beach

The grocery store took over the previous location of Ralphs supermarket, which sat empty for about a year.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA -- Trader Joe's opened its latest grocery store in Hermosa Beach on Thursday.

Following the 8 a.m. opening and "lei cutting," customers were able to snag up free samples at the grocery chain's 458th store in the U.S. The store took over the Ralphs supermarket store in the Park Pacific Shopping Center that closed about a year ago.

Trader Joe's is the sister store to Aldi, the discount supermarket chain, that is also expanding in Southern California. Aldi plans to open some 45 stores the region by the end of the year.

With the opening, Hermosa Beach residents will no longer have to trek to Trader Joe's eight other stores in the South Bay, which includes stores in Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Westchester and Rancho Palos Verdes, to get their hands on some pumpkin spice granola bark, fall harvest salsa and sacha inchi seeds.
