What's That Smell?

A rotten egg smell assailed residents in the Manhattan BeacH-el Segundo area Thursday morning.

Did you notice a rotten egg smell floating through the air Thursday morning?

It was coming from the Chevron El Segundo Refinery, which experienced an equipment malfunction that resulted in the use of one of the facility’s safety flares.

The incident happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday, said Jeff Wilson, the company’s senior representative for policy, government and public affairs.

There was no health threat to the surrounding community, but the smell from the burning flare triggered concerned calls from more than a dozen neighbor, he said.

The South Coast Air Quality Control Management District was called to monitor the scene.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department asked residents to call the Chevron 24-Hour Community Hotline at (310) 615-5342 with questions.
