The U.S. Post Office at 5930 Figueroa St. has two public telephones facing the sidewalk outside—both damaged and dead. The handset of one of them was dangling off its cradle and blowing in the wind Monday evening—while the earpiece of its companion on the other side of the post office building was missing completely, as if chewed off by some fictional telecom monster. (See attached photo.) Mercifully for those of us who don't have a cell phone—let alone a "smart" phone—there was a third public phone in perfect working order a spitting distance away.
