Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes on Avenue 52

The driver is hospitalized with broken bones after hitting a brick wall, with LAPD officers in pursuit.

A suspected drunk driver led Los Angeles Police Department officers on a brief pursuit early Monday morning before crashing into a brick wall on Avenue 52 near the 110 freeway in the Mount Washington area, injuring himself and his passenger, a sergeant said.

The accident happened at about 1:30 a.m., according to LAPD Sgt. Gregory Hoyt.

“A possible DUI driver was noticed on Avenue 52 and pursued by LAPD officers,” Hoyt said. “He lost control on a curve and struck a brick wall. The driver was taken to the hospital with broken bones. The passenger was also taken to a hospital with injuries.''

When doctors determine the driver can be released from the hospital, he will be charged with evading officers and [possibly with] DUI, Hoyt said.

Whether either or both are felonies or misdemeanors depend to a large extent upon the extent of the passenger's injuries, which were uncertain.
