Misreporting by KUSI is Negative Publicity for Imperial Beach

IB draws negative reporting from a local news station's reporting of a South San Diego problem.

KUSI removes story after Patch article calls for correction
In a update to this story posted just yesterday, apparently in response to public outcry for correction, KUSI... (more...)

...Original Article...

Imperial Beach businesses and residents are on their own to fight graffiti vandalism, according to a special news report by KUSI yesterday. While not technically 'fake news', none of the report is actually in Imperial Beach.

KUSI's report, Imperial Beach residents catch acts of vandalism on camera, involves business owners at South Bay Urgent Care in Imperial Beach catching graffiti vandals on camera. Then, the reporter also interviews the manager of Apache Trailer Lodge, however, neither the business nor the trailer park are actually in the city of Imperial Beach.

Imperial Beach was nowhere in the story, the only real story here is about the poor orphaned community of South San Diego, left alone to fight graffiti vandalism without support from the state's 2nd largest city - but that's not what was reported.

IB works too hard to keep it's community free of graffiti to have erroneous news reporting. That's why I sent the following email to KUSI requesting a correction, and followup on how IB actually deals with vandals.

If more people complain, there's a good chance the news station will correct the story. If you can, take a moment to send an email to news@kusi.com and let them know how you feel.

ATTN: News Director;
On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Dani Ruberti's report titled "Imperial Beach residents catch acts of vandalism on camera" was misreported as being in the city of Imperial Beach (IB). In fact, none of the report's video was shot in the city, none of the businesses were in IB, and none of the individuals involved were in IB.
The article was 100% about an orphaned part of San Diego known as South San Diego.
KUSI's story falsely portrays a negative image of IB by suggesting that businesses are left to deal with graffiti vandalism on their own - when the exact opposite is true. City staff actually provides fast and efficient graffiti abatement - and has been very effective in prevention through enforcement, as well as, the city's growing collection of beautifully painted storefront wall murals.
In light of the current era of "Fake News", I hereby formally request that KUSI correct the article in the name of journalistic integrity. Additionally, to correct the record, I request that KUSI consider running a story about how IB is combating vandalism with abatement, enforcement, and beautification.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
