Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall.

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA – A water contact closure in the area of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline has been extended north to include the entire shoreline of Imperial Beach.
The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the closure Tuesday, warning that sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall.
Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand along the affected beaches until testing indicates waters are safe enough for recreational use, county officials said.
