Take Care If Beach-Bound: High Waves, Rip Currents Through Weekend

Waves projected to hit 4 to 7 feet, according to National Weather Service.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA - Big waves and strong rip currents could cause problems for beachgoers today and throughout the weekend.

A National Weather Service beach hazards statement set to take effect at 6 a.m. and extend until Sunday evening. Waves and surf of 4 to 7 feet is expected off the coast of south and southwest facing beaches.

"A long period south-southwest swell will impact the area through Sunday, resulting in elevated surf of 4 to 7 feet and the development of strong rip currents along the San Diego and Orange County beaches,'' according to the
weather service.

Forecasters warned that the high risk of rip currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions. Swimmers can escape a rip current by swimming parallel to the coast before heading back to shore.
