CIF-SS Spring Coaches' Polls Through April 4

There wasn't much local movement in the CIF-Southern Section polls this week aside from the Crescenta Valley softball team, which dropped from the Division 3 top 10 after a week that saw the Falcons fall at Pacific League rival Burroughs by a score of 8-2.

The Crescenta Valley baseball team moved up from No. 9 to No. 8 in the Division 2 poll, and the La Canada softball team stayed put at No. 2 in the Division 5 poll.

Even though many teams in the area are in the midst of their spring break this week, there are still a number of tantalizing matchups on deck.

In baseball, Arcadia plays Monrovia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the final day of pool play in the Apache Invitational. If the Apaches win the tournament (the championship game is Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Arcadia's Giambrone Field) they might deserve a spot in next week's top 10. Arcadia entered Monday with a 9-2 record and wins over three teams ranked in various polls (Montebello, San Dimas and Pasadena Poly).

Another juicy matchup is St. Francis' home date against Chaminade on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Golden Knights are off to a solid 2-2 start in the Mission League, but in Chaminade they face the No. 2 team in Division 2 and No. 11 in the Los Angeles Times' baseball rankings.

In other CIF news, the La Salle boys tennis and La Canada wrestling squads won CIF Southern Section-Ford Academic Awards for cumulative team grade point average per a Monday release sent out by the CIF-SS office. The Lancers' team GPA was 3.783, while the Spartans boasted a 3.490 GPA.

To be eligible for the award, teams must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in college-prep courses in the first semester of the 2010-11 school year. The school with the highest team GPA in its sport wins the honor, and schools are divided into two groups based on enrollment size (1,500 and above, and 1,499 and below). La Salle and La Canada each won in the smaller division.
