The Motor Culture explored from behind the handlebars and wheels

Angeles Crest Highway is a driver's paradise, and an important place for a discussion about speed and survival

It's a legendary, technical, immensely popular stretch of asphalt that traverses the San Gabriel Mountains from La Canada to the 15 freeway beyond Wrightwood. It is also the most dangerous road in California, a fact all too many friends and families already know. But it's not the road.

Today's cars and motorcycles carry real power. Their operators need to be evenly matched with skill and experience. Especially in a mountainous environment with so many variables; oncoming vehicles, wildlife, rockslides, the tourist stopping to take pictures, or for an oncoming emergency vehicle (on a two lane highway, you do not stop...) or with the coming hunting season, hunters scoping from their vehicles, on the highway.

Ian Carpenter has trained the elite of vehicle operators: Navy Seals, Green Beret, Army Rangers, Special Forces. He's also raced cars and motorcycles for most of his life, and teaches adventure riding techniques at his home in New Mexico. Ian will be Chilao School's guest speaker on Sunday, September 30, engaging the audience in an informal but certainly informative discussion about riding and driving, and doing it well.

Everyone is welcome; there is no skill level requirement, no cover charge, no minimum experience level. The fifth in a series of technical skills workshops hosted by Chilao School, Ian's presentation will take place at noon, immediately following Moto Yoga, and served with lunch and refreshments.

Chilao School is located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, one and a half miles from Angeles Crest Highway in Chilao Campground. From La Canada Flintridge, take Angles Crest (Highway 2 north) 27 miles to mile marker 49.69 and Chilao Campground. Turn left into the campground and follow red, white and black signs pointing the way to Moto Yoga and Chilao School.
