New state bill would let teens start school later in the morning

New state education bill would let teens start school later in the morning

In recognition of the many health and safety risks of teen sleep deprivation, Sen. Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has recently introduced SB 328, a state bill that would require California’s public middle and high schools to start the school day at 8:30 a.m. or later. This start time is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and other major public health groups.

Adolescent sleep deprivation is directly linked to increased rates of depression, suicide ideation, drug and alcohol use, and car accidents. Sleep deprivation also undermines academic performance and increases tardies, absences and behavioral issues at school. And teen athletes who get inadequate sleep are more likely to get injured. Numerous studies show that the single best way to address this is to start middle and high schools at 8:30 a.m. or later.

Californians can show their support for healthy school start times by signing the petition at http://tinyurl.com/SSLCApetition, or by calling or sending an email by April 12 for it to be counted and recorded prior to the bill's first hearing.
