While thinking about James' show for July and August, The Wizard of Oz came to mind. Perhaps it was because I just saw a clip for the film starring James Franco or because when I think of James Verbicky, I wonder who is behind the curtain. To quote Dorothy, "We are not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the Rainbow."
James never ceases to amaze, always looking to challenge himself and the viewer. As a self-taught artist, James is always experimenting, giving us a peek behind that curtain.
"The media paintings bridge the gap between sculpture and painting by binding fragments of vintage media to one another, double-exposing language and image and melting them in upon themselves. By unearthing and layering the remnants of dozens of decades of disparate generations, the media paintings transcend simple words and images and become objects containing the essence of human culture." - James Verbicky
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1973, from Polish descent, James lived the majority of his early life between Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, however, as an adult he relocated to the U.S.
James Verbicky has developed a strong presence in the contemporary art market and was selected for a 110-year-old juried exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, France with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts. James Verbicky’s work will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize.
