"The sculpture depicting Alter leaning from a Hobie Cat sailboat is envisioned on Coast Highway, opposite Doheny State Beach in front of the new South Cove condos development," spokeswoman Karin Schnell said.
The condominiums where the surf park will be built broke ground in March of 2017.
"Doheny Beach is surfing," Mayor Debra Lewis said of the new park that will honor surf history in Orange County. "(Surfing) began here. The two are inextricably linked. Nothing will remind people of the fact better than the life-sized Hobie Cat with Hobie at the helm."
According to a GoFundMepage set up to raise money for this sculpture, the base of that statue will commemorate all of the late Hobie Alter's historical contributions to the world's surfing and sailing culture and industries.
Alter passed away in March of 2014 at 80-years-old.
