Laguna Beach Lifeguards Receive Award from NOAA

Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department honored for providing excellent support and service to the National Weather Service.

At the regular meeting of the Laguna Beach City Council on Tuesday, November 19, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration presented an award to the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department for providing excellent support and service and partnership with the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service Rip Current Awareness Program is helping researchers develop a rip current prediction module to improve beach forecasts. The rip current observations taken by the Laguna Beach Lifeguards also help forecasters in our office achieve better situational awareness. The main goal of the program is to improve public safety and increase public awareness of rip currents. With the dedicated support of Laguna Beach Lifeguards, the project can achieve the goal of protecting lives and property.

According to the National Weather Service, rip currents are among the deadliest weather elements along the Southern California Coast.
