Laguna the Twice-Stranded Sea Lion Now Calls Chicago Home

Nice story and video on ChicagoTribune.com today about Laguna, an appropriately-named sea lion that stranded himself in Laguna Beach back on Jan. 9, weighing just 24 pounds.

Of course, the saintly crew at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center took him in and nursed him back to a healthy 61 pounds, eventually releasing him back to his ocean home on March 21.

But his freedom didn't last. Laguna was found six weeks later on a pier in Ventura County, slimmed back down to 38 pounds.

After more rehab time in Vallejo, it was decided that Laguna would probably fare best in captivity -- who wouldn't, when you can have your food given to you instead of having to hunt for it in the wild? -- so he was shipped off to a permanent home at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

Enjoy the deep-dish pizza, Laguna! Go Cubs!
