LCAD Brings Grads and Industry Pros Together

LCAD Industry Open House opens career pathways for new grads

Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) continued its annual tradition of connecting industry professionals with graduating seniors. This year’s Industry Open House was held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at LCAD’s Big Bend Campus in Laguna Beach, CA.

Graduating seniors with BFA degrees in Animation, Graphic Design + Digital Media, Game Art and Illustration were carefully selected by jury to present their portfolios and meet with company representatives. Students shared projects such as mobile games and apps, character design, game design, virtual and augmented reality, brand design in action sports, illustration and drawing and more.

More than forty companies participated in this year’s Industry Open House including Disney Animation, Dreamworks, Free Form Labs, Blizzard, Sony, Roadtrip Nation, Innoceanusa, House of Moves, Taco Bell, Too Faced Cosmetics, Quiksilver and VANS. Company reps met with students for a firsthand look at their portfolios, conducted casual interviews and provided valuable career advice.

Kyle Johnston, President and Founding Partner of Gigasavvy, attends LCAD Industry Open House because he finds that LCAD students are adequately prepared to jump in to real world scenarios with creative vision and skill.

“The talent we meet at LCAD can apply classical design training across both print and digital work,” he said. “They have also proven to thrive in high-pressure environments where their work undergoes intense critique under deadlines.”

Two years ago, LCAD Graphic Design + Digital Media alumna Dohee Yang, secured her first job through Industry Open House. “It was crucial for me getting employed at NextVR, where I worked for two and a half years as a full time virtual reality graphic designer,” she said. Now, she works as a freelance contractor for NextVR after relocating to Colorado.

“Industry Open House is an event that fosters interaction between companies seeking new talent and LCAD students poised for professional success,” said Robin Fuld, Director of Career Services at LCAD. “Many of our students make valuable connections through this event that leads them to careers in their field of study.”
