More Goats On the Way to Clear Laguna Beach of Dry Vegetation

And other news from the office of Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig ...

Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig's weekly update:

More Goats - An assessment of the City’s interface areas have determined that due to the lack of rainfall this past winter, the fuel moisture levels in the plants are extremely low.  Thus, the Fire Department will be bringing on a second herd of goats to modify vegetation and help maintain the fuel break around the City.  One herd of goats will be focusing on the area to the rear of the Pageant of the Masters/Laguna Bowl. The second herd of goats will be focusing on the area between Top of the World and Arch Beach Heights.

Fire Department Mutual Aid Response - The Fire Department sent two engines with six firefighters and a chief officer to assist in the fire fight for the vegetation fire that burned in Ventura County last week.  During the “Red Flag” fire conditions that Southern California experienced last week, the Fire Department also staffed an additional fire engine in the City and activated the “Red Flag” volunteers to patrol the canyons.  It is these volunteers who fly the red fire danger flags throughout the City during “Red Flag” fire conditions.

Annual Compost Giveaway - Last Saturday, the City conducted the annual compost giveaway in cooperation with its contract waste hauler, Waste Management, and green waste recycling contractor, Tierra Verde Industries. In appreciation of recycling efforts by Laguna Beach residents, Tierra Verde supplies 40 tons of compost made from recycled green waste. The City provided up to six empty bags for residents to fill with compost. The event at the ACT V parking lot ran from 7:30 a.m. (to accommodate residents that arrived early) until 1:45 p.m. when the compost ran out. Approximately 450 residents showed up for their free compost.
