Woman Bitten by Rattlesnake at Crystal Cove State Beach

A 61-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after being twice bitten by a baby rattler while playing with her grandchildren at the beach.

CRYSTAL COVE, CA - A 61-year-old Seattle woman is recovering today after being bitten repeatedly by a rattlesnake at Crystal Cove State Beach.

Terréll Holmes was enjoying a sunny day at the beach Saturday with her son and three young grandchildren when she felt a little sting just above her ankle, The Orange County Register reported.

Her son realized it was a baby rattlesnake that bit her and quickly called for an ambulance.

“I had tingling all through my extremities, my head felt like it was blowing up with pressure,” Holmes told the newspaper. “Even my teeth felt like they were swelling. I thought ‘I could die from this stupid little snake.’ It was a scary thing.”

Rattlesnake bites at the beach are rare, but the snakes are a part of life at Crystal Cove State Park where one hiking trail is dubbed ‘Rattlesnake Trail.’ Throughout the park, signs warn hikers of the danger.
