US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-8 is offering two courses in May which will provide sailors and power boaters with an in-depth understanding of nautical charts and coastal navigation.

The first course, How to Read a Nautical Chart (cost $25) comprises two Wednesday nights, May 8th and May 15th from 7PM to 9PM. Students will unravel the mystery of charts, attaining essential knowledge to interpret information and navigate safely to a destination and return to port.

The second course, Basic Coastal Navigation (cost $70 including workbook) covers 7 nights, every Wednesday from May 22nd through July 10th, 7 PM to 9 PM. This comprehensive course covers the basic tools and skills required to be a successful navigator and is recommended for both the novice boater and as a great refresher for experienced captains. This course has a strong emphasis on practical skills and covers navigation theory, plotting and course determination, dead reckoning, time/speed/distance calculations, compass use, tides, bearings and fixes.
