Only 1% of the population has ever witnessed seeing a blue whale swim in the ocean. This class of Laguna Niguel students got a rare treat.

DANA POINT, CA —A group of elementary school children got a rare sight, when they were treated to viewing the first blue whale of the season, Monday.

"Our fishing vessel the Sum Fun first caught sight of the blue whale and gave coordinates to our 10 a.m. Whale Watch boat," Donna Kalez, spokeswoman for Dana Wharf Whale Watching told Patch.

The blue whale is one of the largest creatures to ever live on the earth, and can range from 80 to 100 fee, and can weigh up to 200 tons, according to National Geographic. Though they are still considered endangered, their population is increasing.

In 2018, the first blue whale headed through Orange County waters in early May, making this mammal about a month early, by Dana Wharf Whale Watching's indications.
