A fatality along the carpool lane closed four lanes of Interstate 5 traffic near Avery Parkway around 7 p.m. Monday.
Authorities have not identified the person killed.
The carpool lane and three lanes of traffic were closed at 7:10 p.m., a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said. The lanes reopened about two hours later.
The death was the result of an auto accident, according to one officer.
