Good Day Sunfish: Mola Mola Waves At Dana Point Whale Watchers
What's not to love about the sight of an enormous Pacific sunfish, soaking up some rays in the California sunshine?
DANA POINT, CA — This large Mola Mola, also called the Sunfish, made a not-so-rare debut to whale watchers off of the coast of Dana Point last week.
"We have seen so many sunfish this season, and also many babies," Donna Kalez tells Patch. The babies, which appear as flat circles, could be easily mistaken for "dinner plates," she says.
The California sunfish is one of the largest species of fish in the ocean.

"Females can produce more eggs than any other known vertebrate, up to 300 million at a time," Kalez shared.
The silver disk-shaped fish often suns itself at the plane of the water, laying on their side catching rays and soaking up the sun for which they are named.

Sunfish do love to eat jellyfish and can mistake balloons for their favorite snack if balloons land in the ocean, according to Kalez, so as Earth day approaches, think of the sunfish and don't set your balloons free to land in ocean waters.
