Killer Whales Hunt Dolphins Off Dana Point: Video

Families on board a Dana Wharf Whale Watching vessel got a sight they will never forget: a pod of orcas hunting down fleeing dolphins.

DANA POINT, CA — It's a fact. Orcas love a dolphin meal. This week, an aggressive pod of killer whales chased after fleeing dolphins, the sight captured on drone footage from the popular vessel. A whale-watching cruise turned into a harsh but elegant National Geographic lesson.

In late June, visitors on board the Sum Fun vessel captained by Brian Wooley, when the Orcas arrived and seemingly began "playing with the dolphins," Donna Kalez told Patch.

As the Orcas gave chase, the dolphins powered through the water off the Orange County coastline. The dolphins divided, save for a handful, including a baby.

With each powerful lunge, passengers, especially the children, screamed a chorus of "no! No!" hoping that the whales would not catch the baby dolphin.

"The little guy was no match for the Apex predator," Kalez said. "It may look like a game, but Orcas play to win."
