WATCH: Bevy Of Baby Dolphins Frolic Off Dana Point
Over 300 common dolphins, including babies, swam in a mega-pod stampede in the waters off Dana Point.
DANA POINT, CA — Whale watchers received a rare treat this week when a large pod of dolphins frolicked off the coast of Dana Point.
The "dolphin stampede" where dolphins appear to fly out of the water is an act known as porpoising, according to Capt. Dave Anderson's Dolphin and Whale Safari.
Porpoising occurs when the mammal lunges out of the water at a high rate of speed, which is a much faster mechanism of travel, according to Anderson. "There is less resistance in the air than in the water," he said.

In 2020, there appears to be "a larger number of baby dolphins than usual," according to the folks at Dolphin Safari.
Still Southern California has more dolphins per square mile than anywhere else, Anderson tells us.

"Dana Point is one of the best places in the world to see the large mega-pos that can number in herds of up to 10,000," Anderson says.
