So what about trick-or-treating? Where are the best spots for children to go door-to-door asking for candy in California?
Six California cities are among the top 20 best cities for trick-or-treating across the country, according to real estate and rental website Zillow.
San Francisco once again topped Zillow's annual Trick-or-Treat Index.
Zillow economists ranked cities based on home values, the share of population under 10 years old and single family home density.
"San Francisco tops the 2017 rankings, reclaiming the No. 1 spot thanks to high home values – we think these neighborhoods will give out the biggest candy bars – and homes that are close together to minimize the time it takes to go door-to-door," the report states. "San Francisco has ranked number one on Zillow's list for the past four out of five years."
As for the other cities from the Golden State, San Jose came in second, Long Beach in fourth, Los Angeles in fifth, Sacramento in seventh and San Diego in 14th. In a third report, financial news website 24/7 Wall St., named San Ramon the "Best Town for Trick-or-Treating" in California. Only one city in every state received the title.
San Ramon in Contra Costa County took the prize as it has been recognized as the 12th safest city in California by home security news source Safewise.
In addition, Forest Home Farms in San Ramon hosts trick-or-treating at the farm the Saturday before Halloween, and the local library holds a Halloween Family Storytime event on Halloween. The city is also located near Ghost Golf, a year-round indoor miniature golf course with a haunted graveyard theme and spooky special effects.
With a quarter of residents ages 14 years or younger in San Ramon, 24/7 Wall St. looked at the share of children, housing occupancy rates, poverty rates and the prevalence of crime in thousands of towns across the country. The site also considered the number of nearby Halloween-themed businesses.
