Boater Missing After Vessel Capsizes Off La Jolla

Five people were aboard the 24-foot power boat when it overturned in rough seas.

LA JOLLA, CA -- The owner of a boat that capsized off Windansea Beach in La Jolla remained missing on Nov. 10.

The man, San Diego resident Tony Nguyen, was one of five aboard the 24-foot power boat when it overturned in rough seas off about 6:15 p.m. Nov. 9, according to San Diego Lifeguard Services spokesman Lee Swanson.

Four boaters, who were all wearing life jackets, were rescued. They were taken to a hospital to be treated for relatively minor injuries, Swanson said.

Lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard personnel searched for the fifth as light from a helicopter illuminated the search area, but he was not found, Swanson said. That man was not wearing a life vest.

Swanson said one lifeguard who participated in the effort was blindsided by a wave and swallowed a large quantity of sea water. He was taken to a hospital and was being kept overnight.
