SAN DIEGO, CA — The House of Representatives Thursday approved funding to afford expansions and new construction at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Medical Center building in La Jolla, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) announced in a release.

The funding, through the Major Medical Facility Authorization Act of 2020, is to fund seven facility projects across the country, all told.

According to a release, more than $230 million of the funding will be used to expand the VA Hospital's Spinal Cord Injury Inpatient Unit and construct a parking garage.

Peters said the current spinal cord inpatient unit serves some 700 veterans each year from across southern California, Arizona and Nevada. Its capacity today is only 30-beds.

“The Spinal Cord Injury Center at the La Jolla VA is a pre-eminent spinal cord care provider for the entire southwest; this expansion is needed to ensure our veterans and active duty men and women get the care they need for injuries often sustained in the line of duty,” Peters said in a statement. “I know that both our veterans and their caregivers have been waiting a long time for this new center and parking structure. These crucial funds will provide those who have served our country better care and a better patient experience."
