"Events like our annual luncheon open up the discussion around mental illness and behavioral health and help us implement programs that focus on reducing the impact serious mental illness has on the individual, the family and the community," said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins.

Mental health advocate and documentary film maker Kevin Hines will serve as the event's main speaker. Hines became a mental health advocate after surviving an attempted suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

More than 1,400 people have committed suicide at the bridge since it opened in 1937. Hines is one of only 34 people to survive the fall and the only one to regain full mobility, according to JFS.

The luncheon is scheduled to begin at noon at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at 3777 La Jolla Village Drive. Ticket information is at jfssd.org/luncheon2019 and cost $85.
