VIDEO: Hammerhead Shark Swims Under Kayakers Off La Jolla Shore
An 8-10 foot hammerhead shark was spotted.
A large hammerhead shark was spotted and showed aggressive behavior at La Jolla Shores today, San Diego-Fire Rescue said.
The sighting prompted San Diego lifeguards to evacuate swimmers and close the waters for 24 hours. Kayakers and swimmers saw the shark, which was 8-10 feet in length, around 1 p.m. as it circled them near the surf line. According to SDF-Rofficials, the swimmers climbed aboard the kayaks and were safely taken back to land.
Witnesses told lifeguards that the shark followed the kayaks all the way back to the beach.
The hammerhead was last seen on the south end of La Jolla Shores near Avenida De Playa.
A group of kayakers captured a video of their close encounter with the shark. The video shows the shark swimming under and around the kayaks.
