La Jolla Community Center Reopens Tomorrow

Announces Line-up of Events, Classes & Fundraising Campaign

The La Jolla Community Center will open its doors tomorrow with a focus on safety and with much excitement. “We are excited to welcome our members back. We have missed the social interaction and connection with others” said Nancy Walters, executive director, adding that in-person classes and events will be offered in the Center’s open-air courtyard or in the larger Great Room. The Center will adhere to safety guidelines offered by the state, county government and the CDC. Advance registration is required for all events as well as proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test no older than 72 hours. Masks must be worn at all times in the center and courtyard, unless drinking or eating.

The Center will host a Summer Soiree & Welcome Back Celebration on Friday, June 25 from 4-6. The event will feature raffles, live music, a silent auction and gifts. Advance registration is required by June 21. Cost is $35 for members; $40 for nonmembers.

The Center’s line-up of in-person classes includes: a 4-week Bridge review lecture for all bridge levels; beginning Mahjong; Beginning Spanish; Watercolor Magic; and Silver Age Yoga. Other events include a virtual Distinguished Speaker Series. The next speaker will be Dr. Sumit Chanda, director and professor at Sanford Burnham Presby Medical Discovery Institute who will discuss new therapies and research related to COVID-19 on Tuesday, July 13, from 10-11AM.

The La Jolla Community Center is also excited to announce the recent launch of a corporate fundraiser it’s calling Senior Connect. The Center’s vision is to provide a new computer lab & equipment, multiple levels of curriculum and expanded transportation. “Our vision is to make a difference in the lives of seniors and their families. We want seniors to gain more independence in the use of their iPhones and iPads and computers so they can conduct online banking, order food, make reservations, access medical records and connect with friends and families,” said Ruth Yansick, the Center’s CEO, adding that the Center “is dedicated to helping them meet their needs.”
