La Jolla Music Society's Piano Series to Feature French-Canadian Artist Louis Lortie
French-Canadian artist Louis Lortie will take the stage Jan. 14 at MCASD Sherwood Auditorium in La Jolla.
LA JOLLA, CA – La Jolla Music Society’s Piano Series continues with French-Canadian artist Louis Lortie at MCASD Sherwood Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m.
The brilliant and highly-esteemed pianist Louis Lortie returns to La Jolla bringing “Liszt at the Opera – Mostly with Wagner,” his homage to the iconic opera composer. Featuring piano transcriptions by Liszt, Hugo Wolf, Mozart and Mr. Lortie himself, audiences will hear a program of music from Wagner’s operas that have been arranged for piano. Such arrangements were common in the nineteenth century, when virtuoso performers would use musical themes from popular operas–tunes their audiences would already recognize–to create completely new works so that they could demonstrate their own virtuosity. This program includes transcriptions of arias from Tristan und Isolde, Siegfried and Tannhäuser, among others.
