Man Who Drowned, Died Near Sunset Cliffs Identified

The 61-year-old San Diego resident was fishing Sunday before he went down into the water, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man who drowned and died in the water below Sunset Cliffs Sunday was publicly identified Monday by authorities.

San Diego resident AbelkHalek Boutayeb, 61, had been fishing for about two hours Sunday near Luscomb's Point when, just before 1 p.m., bystanders saw him climb down the cliffs and enter the water, according to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

"A short time later bystanders heard him yelling for help," the report states. "A witness jumped in the water to assist him and found him face down in the water."

Another witness called 911, and first responders arrived and removed Boutayeb from the water. They tried resuscitating Boutayeb to no avail, according to the report, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities ruled his death an accidental drowning.
