The 'Newsies' are Coming!

JCompany Youth Theatre is thrilled to partner with Disney Theatrical Licensing on a special pilot production of Disney’s Newsies Jr. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenage "newsies," who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.

JCompany Artistic Director, Joey Landwehr, explains, “It is 2019 and we are talking about fake news, the lack of real journalism and misleading headlines. In 1899 when Newsies takes place, using the heads of the largest newspapers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, they are dealing with fake news, the lack of real journalism and misleading headlines. In both cases these accusations and gas lighting is happening from men in power. Also in both cases we find that children are on the negative receiving end in many ways. the importance of presenting a show like NEWSIES is so that hopefully we can learn from our past so that we can be the change in the present. These young people presenting NEWSIES are the generation of change. These incredible JCompany Young Artists will not only show you singing and dancing and acting that will bring you to your feet with applause; but they will also show you that they are the mover and the shakers, they are the change we need and the hope for the future.”
